Teen sues school district over Confederate flag prom dress

“A Greenup County (KY) teenager is suing the school district for barring her from the prom for wearing a red dress styled as a large Confederate battle flag.

School officials kept Jacqueline Duty out of Russell High School’s May 1 prom for wearing the dress, calling it too controversial.”

First off, let me say that I think this girl should have been able to wear whatever she wanted to prom. I am not a fan of the Confederate flag, but I am a fan of the First Amendment. School officials should have let her in, and then allowed the students to boo her or ride her out on a pole, or whatever. Or not.

That being said, I do have a few problems with this whole scenario.

First, this girl is from KENTUCKY. Kentucky was NOT part of the Confederacy. Yes, Kentucky had slaves, but it remained a part of the Union as the rest of the slave states seceded. So, YOU, missy, DO NOT HAVE A CONFEDERATE/SOUTHERN HERITAGE!

And, while we’re on it, exactly what is the “southern heritage” that folks wearing the rebel flag are clinging to? If it’s not slavery, what is it? Moonshine? Square dancing? Low test scores? What?

This leads me to my second point: you cannot separate the confederate flag and the confederacy from slavery. You cannot wear a rebel flag or hang one on your gi-normous pickup truck without invoking the ghosts of slavery. You just can’t. It would be like Gerhard Schroeder wearing a Nazi flag to signify pride in his “German heritage.”

Wasn’t the Nazi flag at one time the official flag of the German nation? Yes. And what do people think of when they see the Nazi flag? The holocaust. Just like you cannot separate the confederate flag from slavery, you cannot separate the Nazi flag from the holocaust. The world is still aghast at the sight of a swastika, and persons with IQs above 80 and the ability to empathize with others are still aghast at the sight of the confederate battle flag.

Here’s the third point, and it’s one that has been made a thousand times before: you fucking lost.
You lost the war. You’re a bunch of shit-stinking losers. Whether it was a war about slavery or a war about states’ rights (to have slaves) or a war of Nothern Aggression, you fucking lost. So take your fucking loser flag and put it a goddamn museum. There’s not a goddamn person alive who fought in that shit-stinking war, so it’s time to get over it and time to stop wearing your loser fucking flag. Same with the Nazis. Same with the Romanovs. Same with the Holy Roman Empire. It’s fucking over, you goddamn hicks. Move on.

My final point is this: I support your First Amendment right to be a dumbass, but you must accept responsibility for your actions.

At a press conference accompanying the filing of a lawsuit against the school system yesterday, this girl’s attorney claimed that his client lost out on several college scholarships, because she “was painted as a racist.” Well, young lady, if the shoe fits, wear it.

If you want to stroll around in a god-awful sequin monstrosity that looks like the Confederate flag, then you need to realize that certain people are going to be offended. That might include people who make decisions about college scholarships. (Although, something tells me that it’s going to be amazingly tough to prove this allegation.) If you love your goddamn “heritage” so much, then you can deal with the fact that a lot of people are hostile to your bullshit slave-holding heritage.

In the same way that you shouldn’t expect to win any scholarships from the NAACP, I don’t expect — as a result of my rants on this blog — to ever be offered a job at a Republican-owned firm, or a postion on the staff of a Republican member of Congress. To use another cliche, you made your bed, now lie in it.

  1. I couldn’t have put it better myself. Excellent commentary.

  2. Stupid whore.
